2018 TCOM National Conference Presentation: “Taking TCOM to the Maya”
Attached here is the powerpoint I used for my presentation at the Transformational Collaborative Outcomes Management (TCOM) National Conference in Chicago on 4 Oct 2018. It reflects the research and analysis done by me and two Guatemalan collaborators, Manuela Larios and Estuardo Pacajoj (on either side of me on the photo below, along with two other staff members of ACEBAR). This was a pilot study to see if the TCOM tools of Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) and the Family Advocacy and Support Tool was feasible and/or useful in the rural highland Maya culture of Chichicstenango, Guatemala. The answer was a resounding ‘yes,’ and we are continuing the research, with the goals of:
- Fine tuning the TCOM tools to be culturally appropriate for us in the Maya culture
- Identifying feasible social services that ACEBAR might provide to the youth and families of Chichicastenango
- Better understanding the educational and survival needs of the community’s rural residents
- Shedding insight on ways that emigration from the community to the US might be diminished
