Faces of the UTMB May/June ’16 Clinical Rotation
I always come to Guatemala with every intention of writing often and a lot. I never do so, because with or without a tour, medical mission, or clinical rotation to facilitate, my schedule is always very busy. I do, however, always take a lot of pictures – sometimes of stuff I think is interesting, other times of stuff I think is either beautiful or in some way visually arresting.
A lot of the stuff I shoot over and over and over again is the same stuff tourists take pictures of. I don’t know how many pictures of Lake Atitlan I’ve taken, for instance, but certainly it runs into the hundreds over the 26 years I’ve been coming to and/or living in Guatemala. Some of those photos are very nice. But what I really love are the photos of faces – and doing the work I do, and having the relationship I’m blessed with having with many Guatemala friends, compañeros, and project beneficiaries, I usually have an extraordinary opportunity to take intimate photos.
Anyway, I stayed home from working with the clinic in Olintepeque today because I’m not really needed there, and I wanted to see a few people and get some things done here in Quetzaltenango before I leave on the bus early tomorrow morning for my flight home on Saturday. But it has been raining hard almost all day long, and I couldn’t bring myself to either get sopping wet or pay a taxi to see people I can, in fact, see in September when Mary and I come back. So I sat around in a mostly deserted large residence today, enjoying the quiet and reviewing some of the photos I’ve taken this trip. And looking at the faces of loved ones, old friends, new friends, and a few strangers, I pulled together some that I found most pleasing.
As I go back over more photos, I may add more. But I thought this was a good start. I hope you enjoy them.
