The February 2017 University of Texas PA Program Rotation Begins
Well, as always I’m slow to get things posted to the blog. But better late than never, I suppose. Anyway, the two new students arrived on Sunday, February 5, just a tad later in the day than we expected, because the microbus sent to pick them up conked out on the highway, and a taxi had to be arranged to get them here. These things happen anywhere, but especially in Guatemala, and it’s a good reason to come here ready to be a little flexible. But in the end it was no problem, costing only a few minutes of worry, along with a couple of phone calls andf just under an hour of nervous waiting time on the part of the students.
I showed the new students, Carly and Caitline, around town for a few hours, before my gringo compañeros, Dr. Patricia Crane and Michael Egerman, met with the very capable and inspiring crew of ACEBAR, who did a lot of the community interfacing and organization of local logistics. Also present was the three-woman support crew who was to work as clinical assistants all week. At the end of the meeting, we did mutual introductions with the Guatemalan personnel and Carly and Caitlin, and posed for group photos in the lovely garden in back of the Posada del Arco, where the students are staying (Dr. Crane, Michael, and I have apartments in the adjacent house).
With the advantage of 3.5 days of hindsight at this point, I can say that this Chichicasteca jornada has been a smashing success, and that I’ve never worked with a more compatible and competent crew than is on board with this experience. Kudos to all!
